You can start with a Free Plan where basic writing suggestions and tone detection are available. This version can fix grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors, and on top, it helps to identify unnecessary words too. To get a free account, you just need an email address to register an account, and you can use all the above functions.

The Premium Plan contains everything in free, plus full-sentence rephrasing, vocabulary ideas, tone suggestions, and much more. The cost of this plan starts from 12 EUR/month for a yearly billing – 144 EUR/year – and ends with 30 EUR as a monthly renewal charge. If you want to use the text generation feature, you must choose this subscription, as GrammarlyGO is not available in the Free plan.

To create get access to the tool, open the developer website, and click on the Get Grammarly It’s Free button. You can create an account using your Facebook or Google account, but you can also register with your email address. In case of email authentication, a verification email will be sent with a 6 digits code to prove a valid registration.

Grammarly Web App

After the first login, you will land on a web-based app, where you can manage your account and subscription, can check the usage history, but first of all, you will have the opportunity to take a quick app tour supported by the Gest started checklist. It is highly recommended to take part in this tour, because in addition to presenting the main functions, user interfaces, and buttons, some handy basic settings can also be made there.

The most important setting is the Set goals, which helps Grammarly to suggest the most suitable text corrections depending on who the target audience is or what tone you want to write in. I’ll explain all the related details later in this article. Under the Account menu, there is a very detailed Customize option.

• Dictionary – you can build a personal dictionary by adding your owned words that will no longer be flagged as misspellings
• Language – you can set your primary language and choose the dialect you use to write. (as an example, you can choose American~, British~, Canadian~, Australian~, and Indian English Dialect)

With Premium Subscription, you can set all the above, plus

• Language – Fluency Assistance, what will take the suggestions to be more fluent in English.
• Writing Preferences – here, you can customize your writing preferences to better fit your style. (as an example, you can switch off to suggest spelling out numbers, as by default, Grammarly recommends that you write a letter instead of the number for every number between 0-10)
• GrammarlyGO – you can switch off the AI text generation if you like.

All these customizations will be replicated on all other platforms where you can use Grammarly, such as Desktop app, Browser extension, and Smartphone app. Under the App menu, you can check and download the install packages for all platforms compatible with your operating system and used browser.

Grammarly for Windows & Mac

However an application is installed on the desktop, its true function is experienced when we open World or any other text editor or start writing a new email in Outlook or Gmail. By default, it is integrated into all compatible applications running on the computer, and wherever text can be entered, the well-known Grammarly icon appears and offers suggestions regarding the typed text. After the installation of the browser extension – what is available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari -, I didn’t really find any input fields in a Windows environment where the small logo did not appear, and I could not ask for corrections to my writing. It’s obvious that it works with all elements of the Office suite, but you can use it in webmails, most web forms, and web tools, just like Google Translate, or for Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn posts. It worked even on ChatGPT’s new message section…

Grammarly SmartPhone App, Keyboard

In case of emails, notes, messages, or tweets were written on a smartphone, you don’t have to worry about spelling mistakes or the wrong use of words either, because you can download your own app for both iOS and Android operating systems, which is actually a special keyboard. It contains intelligent predictions and can offer synonyms too. It is worth noting that the keyboard is not the best-designed one, as it is too large and does not adapt to the tablet view, so typing becomes difficult. It would be good to improve further in the coming versions.

Main Grammarly Functions

In the next section, I would like to introduce the main functions in more detail and highlight which actions and suggestions are available for Free~ and which are only in the Premium subscription. For the sake of simplicity, I will use the web app, because it contains the most features in the most transparent way, and I will go from the top to the bottom on the Suggestions Menu right-hand side of the screen.

Writing Performance Score

Actually, this is not only a score, but a full report about your writing, starting with an overall score that represents the quality of the document. If you like to improve the score and the quality, you should address the system suggestions.

It calculates the word counts incl., including reading and speaking time, and compares your writing with other Grammarly users related to the words you used in your text. What is particularly interesting and worth paying attention to is the Readability section. It counts the average word and sentence length and calculates a score that represents the readability of your writing, and tries to push to make the text easily readable by 80% of English speakers. It uses the Flesch Reading Ease test, which you can learn more about here.

Grammar Suggestions

Examining both subscriptions, it is clear that there is a big difference between the free and premium packages, because, based on the exact same text, the free one made 10 suggestions, while the premium one made 26. The system divides the individual suggestions into 4 separate categories, which can be checked by category – choose one from the menu -, or by going from the beginning to the end of the text sentence by sentence. Let’s see these categories:

• Correctness – aims to improve spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Red underline in the text – highly recommended to address
• Clarity – aims to make your writing easier to understand. Blue underline in the text, and usually suggest rephrasing the full sentence or a part of it.
• Engagement – Premium feature – aims to make your writing more interesting to keep your readers engaged. – Green underline in the text
• Delivery – Premium feature – aims to make the best impression, buy AI adjusted formality, confidence, friendliness – Purple underline in the text.

If you agree with the suggestion, you can request an automatic correction by clicking on the blue suggested word. In fact, by moving through the text, you can improve the quality of your writing with some simple mouse clicks.

Plagiarism Check

This is a premium feature that aims to compare billions of web pages to your text and alerts you to consider citations, as it contains x% matching text. In such cases, you are able to create citations also with Grammarly quickly.

Of Course, this should be used and checked when writing studies or articles; it is irrelevant in the case of an email or Twitter post.

GrammarlyGO

GrammarlyGO is a powerful generative AI tool that helps you quickly create, rewrite, brainstorm, and respond to texts. It was introduced in March 2023, and basically, its functions are similar to ChatGPT. It takes context, preferences, and goals into account and offers high-quality drafts, answers, and corrections instantly. GrammarlyGO has personalized style settings so that the generated text reflects the desired tone. At present, the beta version of this feature is available exclusively to Premium subscribers. However, please note that it is subject to further improvements and changes.

The tool can be accessed in two ways:

1. From the Web App by clicking on the GrammarlyGO button in the right-hand menu,
2. In any other applications, click on the small green light bulb icon.

Entering instructions and requests works very similarly to ChatGPT, with the difference that here the number of available requests is kept on track, not the Tokens. GrammarlyGO has a very good solution for rephrasing a sentence or a part of a text, because it is enough to select the part that you are not satisfied with, and you can ask the tool to improve with one click. In order to ensure the sustainability of the service, use is limited to 500 requests each month, which is automatically renewed at the end of the month. Each request is considered as 1 request and will be deducted, even if you don’t use the result or suggestion in the end.

Trust and Security

To ensure security, Grammarly’s desktop and mobile apps, as well as browser extensions, are restricted from operating in sensitive areas like credit card forms, passwords, and URLs. Additionally, the product automatically prevents usage in “read-only” fields, like web form instructions, where text editing is not possible.

At Grammarly, they prioritize compliance with various regulations that govern their privacy obligations. These include the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), among others.

Through my extensive use of Grammarly, I have found it to be more effective in identifying typos and mistakes than traditional grammar checkers. Additionally, the tool provides valuable suggestions for alternative words and sentence rephrasing. I appreciate that it is available on multiple platforms and devices, and even the free version offers powerful features. It’s reassuring to know that the free version is not just a limited trial of the paid version, but rather a robust tool in its own right.

Of course, the premium features are worth to price with the GrammarlyGO AI module, but honestly, the monthly 30 EUR fee is quite expensive, and probably not too many content creators or individual business members can pay it out. Luckily the yearly price is much more comfortable as its offers 60% discount and a 12 EUR monthly fee.
