It’s been a week since OpenAI announced a 10 * $100.000 program to build a democratic AI regulatory framework, and now it’s providing another $1M for the Cybersecurity Grant Program. The main goal of the initiative is to enable actors on the defensive side to further develop their artificial intelligence-based security capabilities and to start joint work in this area.
They feel that the time is here to act on the matter, reverse the power dynamics, and with the help of AI, take the defense to a new level against cyber criminals. They ensure the state-of-the-art AI capabilities are applied on this side first, and that they will develop a measurement capability that will quantify the cybersecurity defense of AI models to understand their effectiveness. I think such standards can be a reference point for regulatory agencies, and they can even tie subsequent operations to a certain performance. OpenAI definitely wants to run ahead in this topic and, if possible, be a pioneer in the development of measurements and standards.
Although the attackers are in a more advantageous position, the defenders can take up the competition with outstanding coordination and organization, which points toward the common goal in the direction of people’s safety. In addition, OpenAI is fully committed and ready for all levels of discussion, which promotes understanding of challenges and effective defense.
Here are some application ideas written by the OpenAI team:
- “Collect and label data from cyber defenders to train defensive cybersecurity agents.
- Detect an mitigate social engineering tactics.
- Automate incident triage.
- Identify security issues in source code.
- Assist network devices forensics.
- Automatically patch vulnerabilities.
- …”
The full list and the application form can be accessed here.
It is important to highlight that this program focuses on defensive cyber security, so at this time, offensive solutions cannot be taken into account.
OpeanAI thinking about continuous cooperation with the winning applicants, where they could offer other support too in addition to the funding. They will provide support in $10.000 increments from the $1M found, which can use as API credits, direct funding, or any other support in equivalent value.
