From May 12 onwards, OpenAI has provided ChatGPT Plus subscribers with a range of third-party plugins. A new plugin has been added to the system almost every day, serving diverse purposes. As there are now numerous plugins available, we aim to bring some order to the selection by presenting each plugin by category in a series of articles. At this time, we are looking for suitable tools to improve the efficiency of administrative tasks; in summary, these are ChatGPT Productivity Plugins.
With the AskYourPdf plugin, ChatGPT Plus users can now search PDF documents and get relevant answers based on their contents. This advanced technology leverages the power of AI to enable you to interact with your documents more effectively and seamlessly. Simply upload your PDFs, and let AskYourPdf transform them into interactive conversational partners who can dig into the context and provide detailed explanatory answers to your questions.
How does it work
There are two ways to query PDF Documents after a successful Plugin installation:
- Using a URL: If you have publicly accessible file storage like Dropbox, Google Drive, or any other, then you just need to enter your prompt first into the ChatGPT message section and paste the URL at the end. Example: “What are the predictions regarding big data jobs based on the following report: https://www3.weforum.org/docs/Wef_Future_of_Jobs_2023.pdf” Check out the response here.
- By AskYourPDF document ID: you can use the provider website to upload your PDF file and use their Document ID as a reference when you interact with ChatGPT. Example: “How the labor market will change in the coming years based on this doc_id: 862cc14d-f2b1-45ef-997c-02f9e00d4719” Check out the response here.
Conclusion
The plugin is particularly useful when the user’s question pertains to content within a PDF document. When providing answers, the plugin also specifies the page number where the relevant information was found. As usually, an online store is available, I assume option 1 (URL) will be used; however, if an error occurs when querying the API, the user is prompted to download their document first, then manually upload it to the AskYourPDF website (option2). Regarding data privacy, I suggest checking the terms of use and the FAQ section on the website – unfortunately not too long, but that’s good to have a document delete option based on doc_id.
Service founded in March 2023 – founder not known; most likely, it is private.
